Shetland Colours and Markings
These descriptions are old Shetland words and how they are descibed on the pedigrees, using the main body colour first, then the markings
Blacks, shaela(dark grey), Emsket(bluish grey) grey, light grey, white.
Browns Dark brown, moorit(reddish brown) mioget(yellowish brown Fawn, musket(pale greyish brown) white.
Recognised markings :- Gulmoget, having light underparts, a mouflon pattern like a Soay sheep
Katmoget, Having a light coloured body with dark belly and legs, and a moget face, this is the reverse of a Gulmoget.
Head:-
Krunet, darker coloured sheep with patch on top of the head Moget Faced, characteristic markings of the katmoget pattern, without the black neck and belly markings
Blettet, white patches on nose and top of head Mirkface, white, with dark patches on face
Bieset/Sneedled,dark coloured sheep with white stripe or blaze down forehead Sholmet, any colour, other than white, with white face
Yuglet, colour around eyes is different from remainder of body Snaelit, light coloured body and snow white face
Katmollet, light coloured nose and jaws Mullit, white with darker nose and jaws
Smirslet, white around the mouth head or neck
Neck:-
Bielset, circular band of a different colour around the neck Bronget, Dark coloured, with light coloured breast
Kraiget, neck a different colour from body Kranset, dark coloured, white around eyes and head
Body:-
Iset, black or shaela with lots of white fibres, gives a bluish hue Bersugget, patches of irregular colours
Marlit, various shades of different colours, mottled Brandet, having another colour across body, and over the back in stripes
Skeget, stripes of different colours on the sides, not going over back .Bioget, white back, darker sides and belly, or vice versa
Fronet, Black/Brown spottedwith white head and black/brown spots around eyes Ilget, white with spots of a different colour
Bioget, with a white back and darker sides and belly, or vice versa Fronet, Black/Brown, spotted with white head and black/brown spots around sides
Blaget, white with irregular dark patchesresembles snow covered ground Flecket, white with large black/brown patches(not as good as Jacobs)
Sponget, dark coloured, with small white spots Sokket, legs a different colour to the body
